The Piccadilly Valley is arguably one of the Adelaide Hills’ best sites for Chardonnay. This is oft-known as the Yellow Label. Made by Mike Mudge.
Petaluma, Yellow Label, Chardonnay, Adelaide Hills, 2019
Medium-light straw gold hue. Awash with rich stonefruit melange: yellow nectarines and peaches with shavings of oak spice, just snuffed incense coil, hints of barley sugar, golden pear and underlying creamy lemon butter and grapefruit. The power is undeniable with big, broad shoulders and a solid core of deep rich flavour. The time on lees gives an umami off-set before a big whack of phenolic grip drying the finish. There’s still fine and bright acidity to help provide a spine but it’s not the feature. Unashamedly made in full-bore mode and will age.
