From a single Wilyabrup vineyard (Knotting Hill) planted to the Gingin clone in 1990. Partial barrel ferment. Maturation in 25% new French oak (remainder older French oak) for 10 months. No lees stirring or malolactic fermentation.
Clandestine Vineyards, Chardonnay, Margaret River, 2021
Soft pale golden hue. Nose of briny Margaret River hits over preserved lemon, cumquat, a little peach, juicy melon and rind before flinty sulfides and biscuity oak. Holds itself back with some restraint. Easy for this to fall over into blousy land but stays on course with a firm spine of acidity. Grapefruit citrus and stone fruit richness for brightness of fruit. A little lick of phenolic texture adds to a good package.
