From the ancient soils of Wrattonbully (just north of Coonawarra), the Smith and Hooper wines are produced from the family owned Yalumba stable.
Smith & Hooper, Cabernet Sauvignon/Merlot, Wrattonbully, 2019
Choc mint slice as prime, then heavy with plum and dark berry fruit conserve. Black olive, Chinese 5 Spice and bay leaf take care of a spiced, earthen edge over vanilla tipped cigar and demerera sugar. Soft, cedary oak plays its role. Medium to full bodied with gripping, drying, broad tannins that underwrite polished, dark fruits. The finish carries some minty fresh brightness and life to offset the weight of the tannins and the chary oak. Good value for those seeking a chunky (yet modern) red for now or in several years time.
